Melanotan II is a research-grade synthetic analog of alpha-melanocyte stimulating hormone (alpha-MSH), originally developed at the University of Arizona in the 1980s and 1990s as part of a research program examining synthetic melanocortin receptor agonists.

What the Research Shows

Melanotan II is a non-selective agonist of melanocortin receptors with documented activity at MC1R, MC3R, MC4R, and MC5R. It is studied in preclinical research models examining melanocortin receptor signaling pathways, neuroendocrine biology, and the physiological roles of individual melanocortin receptor subtypes. Research on MC4R agonism has been active in the context of energy homeostasis and metabolic signaling research models.

The University of Arizona research program that developed Melanotan II subsequently led to bremelanotide (PT-141), which received FDA approval in 2019 under the brand name Vyleesi. Melanotan II itself did not advance through the pharmaceutical development pathway and remains an unapproved research compound. It is not approved by the FDA for human or veterinary therapeutic use.
